This page explains how North Norfolk District Council uses information about you and how we protect your privacy.
Who we are
North Norfolk District Council is the data controller and holds personal information. As a data controller, we are committed to protecting your privacy and processing your personal data in accordance with data protection legislation. This includes the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and the Data Protection Act 2018. The Council has a Data Protection Policy which provides information about how we process personal information. ‘Processing’ is a word used to describe the variety of ways in which your information can be used, held or dealt with.

The Council’s Electoral Services Department also processes personal information and is a data controller. The Electoral Registration Privacy Policy details what personal information they process and why it is available.
Whilst elected Councillors sometimes process your information within their role at North Norfolk District Council, they may sometimes do so for other reasons, for example when dealing with their ward work. In such cases, individual councillors can be data controllers. Please refer to the Elected Members Privacy Policy for further information.
The information we collect about you
Information may be collected by the Council, or otherwise processed, for a number of reasons permitted by law. These include:
- Where you have given consent;
- Where it is necessary for the performance of a contract;
- To comply with the Council’s legal obligations;
- To protect life;
- To be able to carry out a duty or task in the public interest;
- Where it is necessary for our legitimate interests.
Information is kept for a period of time. This period of time depends on the information it is and why it is held. Please see our Data Retention Policy which gives information about the categories of information held and how long it is held for.
North Norfolk District Council processes personal information in accordance with the Data Protection Legislation. Your information may be processed by different parts of the Council for various reasons permitted by law. Each department keeps a list of the reasons why it processes data. Homelessness Data England Project
The Council is working with the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities (DLUHC), which wishes to collect a range of information to improve its understanding of causes and factors related to homelessness, including those threatened with homelessness. This will involve sharing information and personal data and will help DLUHC improve homelessness services, which is explained in the privacy notice.
Data Protection Principles
Please see our Data Protection Policy which gives details about how we deal with personal data. We will process your personal information lawfully, fairly and transparently and in accordance with GDPR Data Protection Principles. In cases where a decision is made using automated decision-making, you will have a right to review of that decision by an officer of the Council.
We have appropriate technological and organisational measures in place to prevent the loss, misuse or alteration of your personal information. Your information will be stored securely.
Data retention and sharing
We will retain your information in line with our Data Retention Policy. We do not pass on your details to any third party unless you give us permission or the Authority is permitted to do so by under legal authority. Where the Council transfers any data outside the European Union, it will put in place suitable measures and safeguards to protect personal data.

Your information: Your rights
You have the right to request any personal information that we hold about you. Such requests are called Subject Access Requests. You also have additional rights. These include:
- to ask that we update, complete or correct your information
- to ask that we restrict or erase your information;
- to object to our using your information
- to request that we transmit your information directly to another organisation (‘data-portability’).
