New Artspace for Cromer with re-development

One of Cromer’s iconic seafront buildings has been given a new lease of life with plans to redevelop the Art Deco building on the promenade.

Cromer Artspace and North Norfolk District Council have agreed plans to turn the building into a new Art Space for the town.

The charity, which was behind the Bigger Picture project and last year’s Autumn Festival will use the space to provide exhibitions, workshops & community events which will open up opportunities for aspiring artists and showcase the wealth of existing talent in North Norfolk and beyond.

A survey carried out by Cromer Artspace identified support for more Art in the town, and the building will be an asset for Cromer residents and another key cultural attraction for visitors.

The town has a wealth of public art, with galleries, installations around town, and participation in the yearly Open Studios event and with a new feature for the Art Deco block, the new building will further enhance its reputation as a creative community.

Cllr. Virginia Gay, portfolio holder for Leisure, Wellbeing and Culture said: "This is brilliant news all around.  It's good news for the energetic, imaginative team at Cromer Artspace but it's also good for North Norfolk's artistic community in general and for the Art Deco block itself.  I'm so looking forward to the Easter show in a renovated building."

The building has been used for storage in recent years and will undergo a period of renovation before the first show, planned for Easter.

Cromer Artspace are calling for volunteers to help with the project, and anyone interested in helping out is invited to attend a volunteers meeting at the Cromer Community Centre on February 26^th, at 2pm. 

 A spokesperson for the charity said:

“Cromer is a real hub for artists, and it will be wonderful to have an inspiring community space where people can come to see Art and take part in events.

We plan to open with an exciting show in the Spring, although it will take a while before the renovations are finished. This is very much a work in progress, but we are keen to start welcoming artists and visitors as soon as practically possible.”
