Work begins on listed wall in Fakenham

Repair works being undertaken by North Norfolk District Council (at a cost of £120,000) have begun on a Grade 2 listed wall at Fakenham Community Centre.
The crinkle crankle wall, a wall characterised by a unique ‘curly’ appearance, is protected after being granted listed status by Historic England.
The works are projected to run through the summer and will be overseen by historical consultant Dr David Watt of Hutton & Rostron Environmental Investigations Ltd.
Crinkle crankle walls are thought to originate in Egypt and optimise minimal brick use for maximum stability, with a single layer of bricks fortified through convex and concave curves.
