Council seeking land for new affordable homes

North Norfolk District Council is working with local housing associations Broadland Housing Association and Flagship Housing Group to seek out small and medium sites with potential to build new, affordable homes in the district.

The project aims to make the process for potential developers as straightforward as possible, with clear specifications for new homes, access to free planning support, guaranteed prices and a clear cash flow plan.

Once built, one of the local housing associations will buy the new homes and let them at sub-market rents to households in housing need. 

If more sites can be sourced, it will create a new supply of quality, affordable homes for people on the Council’s housing list, encouraging the retention of young people and families in the area who may otherwise be unable to afford to rent or buy in the district.

Rural locations can still be considered for potential housing, known as “exception sites,” and landowners considering selling their land are encouraged to get in touch, even if they have no wish to develop it themselves.

Cllr Wendy Fredericks, NNDC’s Portfolio Holder for Housing and People Services, commented:

“As a council we own very little land for developing affordable homes. 

We are asking landowners and developers to come forward with schemes or suggestions to provide homes for our local residents. 

The housing strategy team will work with you to see what is possible, and how you can leave a legacy of safe, quality affordable homes for local people for years to come.”
