North Norfolk Youth Council are lighting Cromer Pier blue as part of Norfolk & Waveney Mind’s Do Blue Campaign to support mental health awareness.

The Pier will be lit up in blue on Tuesday 10 October, which is World Mental Health Day – the Youth Council are inviting people to join them on the Pier from 6:30pm.

Tyler Wragg, North Norfolk Youth Councillor, said:

‘The NNYC is immensely proud to work towards mental health awareness and charity. Cromer Pier is a wonderful part of North Norfolk and lighting it up blue is a clear dedication to anyone living with a mental illness, 1 in 7 in Norfolk live with depression or anxiety and it’s crucial that they know they’re not alone and that they have resources to help them and the NNYC will always campaign for more mental health resources, as they are very much needed.

Lighting up Cromer Pier is a big moment, it very rarely happens and so the NNYC is very proud to have contributed a large part in this and in being a voice for mental health awareness, and we all hope it can continue to do so in the future. Working with charities such as Mind is an amazing way to help boost awareness and show that work is being done on mental health, we should always work towards supporting others and this is a fantastic way to do that, especially as people often feel like living in a rural area means there is nothing for them, we must change this idea and stigma, young people will play a vital part in doing so but so can everybody.

No one should feel alone, it’s time to shine a light on mental health. It’s time to Do Blue!”

Pete Boczko, Chief Executive Officer of Norfolk and Waveney Mind, said:

“We are so pleased that Cromer Pier will be lit up blue for the first time this World Mental Health Day as part of our Do Blue campaign. It’s bound to get people in Cromer talking and raise awareness of our mission to make sure no one in our region has to face poor mental health alone. We’d like to say a big thank you to North Norfolk Youth Council for their brilliant support.

“It’s not too late for other organisations to get involved in this year’s Do Blue campaign. It’s not just about major gestures such as illuminating buildings – anything from wearing blue clothes for the day, to baking and selling blue cakes, to being sponsored to dye your hair or beard blue will help raise awareness of the crucial services we provide.

“Every penny raised will help us to make a difference to people’s mental health in Norfolk and Waveney.”
