Cromer Beach Advisory

Good progress is being made for the Cromer and Mundesley Coastal Management Schemes, as contractors Balfour Beatty undertake the work programmes at both locations.

Rock is now being offloaded at both beach locations, delivered by barge onto the shore during high tide. The rock is dropped into the water, so that when the tide goes out, and it is recovered from the sand using excavators and dumpers and sorted into stockpiles.

In Cromer, a large amount of rock has already been delivered, and the contractors have started to place the rock revetment to the west of the pier.

When finished, the rock revetment will cover approximately 300 metres to the west of the pier, in line with the bottom of the Melbourne Slope.

The Council would like to thank beach users for their patience so far, allowing these works to proceed on schedule.

Moving into Cromer Carnival week, with higher-than-usual town and beach activity, we would like to advise residents, visitors, and beach users of the best areas of the beach to visit.

Due to these vital works, areas west of the pier (shaded in red on the map) are temporarily closed due to heavy construction activity including large machines moving in this area.

We advise people to always avoid these closed-off areas due to continuous or tidal-dependent high-risk construction activity. These areas are closed to help facilitate the work and ensure the work can continue without disruption and keep our beach users safe.

The areas shaded in yellow on the map are areas of the beach that should be used with caution. This section is subject to heavy machinery movement at different times throughout the day and during times of rock delivery there maybe partial closures in this area.

The rest of the beach (shaded in green on the map) are open as usual, and we encourage visitors, residents, and beach users to use these areas when visiting Cromer Beach to enjoy a great day out and local businesses.

“It is necessary for the Council to section off the areas of the beach where the stockpile is taking place, so that the safety of beach goers can be maintained, and so that the contractors can continue this vital work uninterrupted – these sections are an active work site.

Fortunately, Cromer is blessed with an expansive coastline, and lots of fantastic businesses along the promenades and the Pier which are all open – the East Beach is open towards and beyond the Rocket House, as is the West beach towards the Cromer Artspace building.

We would like to thank everyone for their patience during these vital coastal works, which will help protect over 600 properties from coastal erosion in Cromer and Mundesley over the next fifty years.”
