North Norfolk toilets recognised at national awards

New public toilets in Fakenham and Wells were recognised at the 2023 Loo of the Year Awards, receiving ‘Platinum’ recognition

Toilets are independently assessed on judging criteria, including quality, signage, cleanliness, and accessibility in providing exemplary public facilities.

To ensure these toilets cater for the needs of North Norfolk’s residents and visitors, they feature Changing Places facilities, an accessible toilet, a family room, and a gender-neutral room.

The facilities at Queens Road and Stearman’s Road Car Parks, which were built by Aspect Group Services, were built with water and energy efficiency in mind and were opened in 2023.

Cllr. Lucy Shires, portfolio holder for Finance, Estates & Property Services said:

“We’re very proud of our new public toilets - facilities like these are an essential provision for many residents and visitors with advanced or complex needs, so we’re very pleased to be recognised by the Loo of the Year Awards and to receive two Platinum award.

In continuing to open facilities like Fakenham, Wells and Vicarage Street in North Walsham, we are providing an exemplary, nationally-recognised standard of toilets in North Norfolk”

Peter Graves, Divisional Director, Aspect Group Services, said:

“It has been a pleasure to work with North Norfolk District Council to construct these fabulous facilities. We are delighted that the facilities have been recognised for their design, quality of finish and cleanliness. 

Being awarded a Platinum overall award, along with a Diamond award for the Changing Places provision is a huge credit to all involved.”

The Council’s programme of public facility delivery continued in 2023, with the opening of the new toilet block at Vicarage Street in North Walsham and renovation of The Leas in Sheringham, which is due to receive Changing Places facilities too.

In Spring 2024, the toilets in Albert Street in Holt will also undergo transformative works, bringing improved facilities to the market towns.

The Council regards the provision of high-quality public conveniences as a key service underpinning the District’s tourism offering as well as town centre economies.
