Council marks the completion of the Mundesley Coastal Management Scheme

North Norfolk District Council marked the completion of the 18-month programme of works that will help protect the village and its coastal infrastructure into the future with a small celebration event for local stakeholders and contractors at Lucy’s Cafe, Mundesley Promenade.
The scheme started in early 2024 and was implemented alongside a similar scheme in Cromer, which involved major civil engineering works to reinforce the existing sea defences in both locations, protecting over 600 properties from coastal erosion and storm impacts.
In Mundesley, the scheme involved concreting works to re-level and resurface the existing sea wall on the east promenade, adding a new set of steps to improve beach access and the creation of rock reinforcements to the east of the beach near the Lifeboat Station. To the west of the beach, a rock berm and temporary rock stockpile were constructed.
The 21,000 tonnes of Scottish granite imported rock provides 'armour', was brought onto the beach by barge and moved into place with diggers and dumpers. The rock was placed in a specifically designed formation, with much of it being buried well below the beach level.
The celebration event was attended by staff from the Council, representatives from Balfour Beatty (the principal contractor), Mott MacDonald (the Designers) and other subcontractors who delivered the scheme, together with local business owners, members of the Parish Council, Coastwatch and the Mundesley Surf Lifeguards who collaborated with the Council to ensure the scheme could proceed throughout the busy summer months.
The Council is enormously grateful to residents, businesses, visitors and beach users who dealt with the inconvenience during these works, which allowed the project to be completed on schedule.
Cllr Harry Blathwayt, portfolio holder for Coast, said:
“This small celebration marks the culmination of the greatest project ever undertaken by North Norfolk District Council, and owing to Local Government Reorganisation, this will never be surpassed.
“It is fitting that this scheme, combined with the Cromer work, will protect 600 homes of North Norfolk residents. My personal thanks go to all involved.”
Including Phase 1 of the Cromer works (completed in 2015), the two schemes (Cromer and Mundesley Schemes) will have received approximately £25m of funding from the Environment Agency, with North Norfolk District Council, Regional Flood and Coast Committee and Mundesley Parish Council also contributing towards the Mundesley Scheme.
