To mark the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe, Cllr. Victoria Holliday laid a wreath at the Poppies in Steel memorial, and read out the following Cllr Victoria Holliday tribute:

"Today, we gather to commemorate the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day, a momentous occasion that marked the end of World War II in Europe. On this day, we honour the bravery, sacrifice, and resilience of those who fought for freedom and peace.

Eighty years ago, the world witnessed the triumph of democracy over tyranny. Millions of soldiers, civilians, and those on the home front contributed to this victory, and their legacy continues to inspire us. We remember the courage of our veterans, the strength of our communities, and the unwavering spirit that carried us through those dark times.

As we reflect on the past, we also look to the future. The values of peace, unity, and democratic freedom that were fought for during the war remain as vital today as they were then. It is our duty to uphold these principles and ensure that the lessons of history guide us towards a better, more peaceful world.

Let us take this opportunity to express our deepest gratitude to all who served and sacrificed. Their legacy is our heritage, and their courage is our inspiration”
