The National Heritage List for England (NHLE) contains all listed buildings, scheduled monuments, protected wrecks and registered parks, gardens and battlefields. The Heritage List is the only official and up to date database of all nationally protected historic buildings and sites in England.

Disclaimer

Please read the following carefully before searching the list, as it provides extra guidance for your search in the National Heritage List.

If the building or structure you are looking for does not appear in your search results, it may still be listed.

There are two main reasons why it may not appear:

  1. The name or number of the building or structure may have changed since the time of listing.
  2. The building or structure may not be listed in its own right but it could still be listed through its position within the ‘curtilage’, or grounds, of a listed building.

To be considered listed, a curtilage building or structure must satisfy several of the following tests. It must:

  • predate the 1 July 1948
  • be physically related to the ‘principal’ listed building, meaning the building for which there is a list description
  • have been in the same ownership as the ‘principal’ listed building at the time of listing (for buildings listed on or after the 1 January 1969), or at the 1 January 1969 (for buildings listed before this date)
  • have served an ancillary or supporting function to the ‘principal’ listed building at the time of listing (for buildings listed on or after the 1 January 1969), or at the 1 January 1969 (for buildings listed before this date)
