Private individuals who keep dangerous wild animals must not create a risk to the public. They must ensure the welfare of the animals. A list of dangerous wild animals is available in an accompanying schedule to the Dangerous Wild Animals Act 1976.

The Act allows the Council to seize any animal on unlicensed premises.

Zoos, pet shops and circuses do not need a dangerous wild animals licence because they need a different type of licence.

Once your application has been received, an officer will contact you as soon as possible, within 28 days. A vet inspection is required for the licence and is paid by the applicant, in addition to the application fee.

The amount of time it takes to issue or reject the application varies depending on several factors, including:

  • availability of a veterinary surgeon for the initial inspection
  • officer workloads at the time of application
  • your availability for inspections

Dangerous wild animal licences are valid for 2 years. The expiry date will be shown on the licence.
