Are you being asked to take an elderly passenger to London, deliver a package on their behalf, or asked to take them to the bank?
General Information
You must have a licence to drive a licensed hackney or a private hire vehicle. Our standard licence allows you to drive both types of vehicle. You also must also work for an NNDC licensed taxi operator if you drive a private hire vehicle. Once we receive a complete application and acceptable DBS disclosure, we decide new applications within 28 days and renewals within 7 days.
Visit the apply for a taxi licence page if you want to register as a licensed taxi driver within North Norfolk.
Interview
As part of the application process, you will need an interview with a member of the licensing team. The interview will take approximately one hour and will cover the following:
- your suitability to become a taxi driver
- the timescales of your application
- the taxi policy and handbook
For all newly licensed taxi drivers, we will provide:
- a copy of the taxi handbook
- other important information
We expect new applicants to read the handbook before attending the interview. It is the responsibility of all taxi drivers to read and abide by the handbook at all times once licensed. Please email our Licensing Team if you need to buy a replacement handbook.
Renewal
As a taxi driver, you should ensure that you renew your licence prior to its expiry date. Once a licence has expired, you must reapply as a new driver.
DBS certificate
You will need to ensure that your DBS is valid at the time of renewal. Applying for a new enhanced DBS check can take up to 90 days and could hold up your renewal application, meaning that you would be unable to drive during this time. If you have registered your DBS certificate on the DBS update service, this will continue to be valid as long as the payment card you used does not expire. You will need a new enhanced DBS if you change your name.
Your information
We have a duty to protect the public funds we administer, and therefore, we may use the information you have provided on the application form for the prevention and detection of fraud. We may also share this information with other bodies responsible for auditing or administering public funds for these purposes.
Overseas applicants
People applying for a taxi licence who have lived overseas for all or part of their life will be asked to produce a certificate of good character as well as completing a DBS check and providing all other evidence.
The GOV.UK Criminal records checks for overseas applicants webpage gives details on how to get good character records for each country.
