Find out about the Conservation and Design Awards

The award, in the form of a bronze plaque, has been presented annually by the Council since 1982 to the scheme considered to make the most significant contribution to the built environment within the District. Whether it be new build, extension, restoration or refurbishment the Graham Allen Award recognises excellence in all design projects.

The late Councillor G.S. Allen was the first Chairman of North Norfolk District Council – he was a keen advocate and supporter of Conservation and Design. The award scheme has been run in his honour since 1982.

The award is a great opportunity to seek recognition for outstanding work and celebrate projects which have made a standout contribution to local communities, heritage and the built environment of the District.

For the first time in the awards history, 2015 saw the introduction of a People’s Choice Award held over the Council's Greenbuild weekend. Last year saw over a thousand votes with members of the public choosing their favourite schemes. The public vote is helping to raise awareness of the importance of good design and the contribution it makes to the places we live, work, and visit. It also raises standards and expectations and shows what can be achieved with creativity and collaborative working.

Anyone can vote for the People’s Choice Award and we encourage as many participants as possible. Council Officers will be on hand at Greenbuild and there will also be a five minute presentation which will guide voters through each of the shortlisted schemes.

The winners of the all four awards including Winner, Highly Commend, Commended and People’s Choice will be announced at an awards ceremony in the autumn.

The entries received are shortlisted by members of the Council’s Development Committee and Graham Allen’s eldest son Edward Allen on judging day.

Anyone can submit a scheme for the Graham Allen Award, provided they have sought permission from the owner. Please see further details within the entry form. The closing date for entries for the next running of the awards will be announced shortly.
